ICAO — Short Course
Performance Based Navigation (PBN)
The foundation of modern airspace design. Built to equip Technical and ATC personnel with the knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and optimise Performance-Based Navigation in compliance with ICAO standards.
Duration of Course:
5 Days
Course Overview
PBN Course is designed to equip technical, operational, and Air Traffic Control personnel with the vital skills needed to plan, implement, and optimize PBN environments.
This course bridges the gap between conceptual framework and operational reality, guiding participants through the core principles of RNAV and RNP. By exploring system performance requirements across PBN’s three fundamental pillars — Infrastructure, Specification, and Application — participants will learn how to design and manage airspace that meets strict ICAO global standards.
Participants will learn to distinguish between conventional navigation, RNAV, and RNP capabilities, apply ICAO system performance requirements across operational scenarios, and interpret navigation specifications spanning oceanic, en-route, terminal, and approach phases.
Course Curriculum
Our PBN Course is an immersive program engineered to transition trainees from conceptual navigation theory to operational airspace design mastery.
Module 1: Evolution & The PBN Concept Framework
- The Navigation Shift
- Strategic & Global Value
- The Three Pillars Strategy
Module 2: The Infrastructure Pillar & System Performance
- Positioning Architecture

Rigorous Evaluation Standards
Certification requires passing an end-of-course evaluation designed to measure practical understanding:
- Theoretical Examination: A written test verifying comprehension of navigation specifications, sensor requirements, and ICAO performance criteria.
- Practical Case Study: A group/individual exercise demonstrating the ability to evaluate a theoretical airspace and select the correct PBN application to resolve a capacity bottleneck.
Participants will be awarded an internationally compliant Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) Course Certificate, fully aligned with ICAO guidelines
Pre-requisite
- Air Traffic Control, airspace design, or CNS technical background; or
- as determined by Civil Aviation Authority or other states Regulator/ Air Navigation Service Provider.
