Helideck Radio Operator (HRO)

Where offshore meets airspace, clear communication saves lives. Designed to equip personnel with the radiotelephony skills and operational knowledge required to safely coordinate helicopter movements between offshore facilities and incoming or outgoing aircraft, in compliance with CAAM CAD 1406 (Vol I to IV).

Course Overview

Designed to equip personnel with the radiotelephony skills and operational knowledge required to safely coordinate helicopter movements between offshore facilities and incoming or outgoing aircraft, in compliance with CAAM CAD 1406 (Vol I to IV).

Course Curriculum

The HRO Course is an immersive programme engineered to build competency in offshore aeronautical communication, meteorological reporting, and helicopter movement coordination, delivered across three consecutive days.

 

Day 1

  • Introduction
  • Basic meteorology
  • Aviation meteorology
  • Offshore weather observation
  • Meteorology information and observation
  • Meteorology radiotelephony exercise

 

Day 2

  • Helideck regulations and standards
  • Air traffic regulations
  • Offshore standard operating procedures
  • Radiotelephony
  • Emergency procedures
  • HRO radiotelephony exercise

 

Day 3

  • HRO theory assessment
  • Radio log
  • HRO practical assessment

Rigorous Evaluation Standards

  • Continuous Assessment: Daily exercises confirming a solid grasp of meteorology, offshore regulations, radiotelephony procedures, and emergency communication protocols.

  • Practical Application: Simulated radiotelephony exercises evaluating message clarity, correct use of standard call signs, and response speed during normal and emergency helicopter arrivals or departures.

 

Successful participants will receive the AvAC Certificate of Competency in Helideck Radio Operations, subject to meeting the required standard in both the theoretical and practical assessments, in compliance with CAAM CAD 1406 (Vol I to IV).

Pre-requisite

  • New and experienced Helideck Radio Operators (including those attending for refresher purposes); or

    Personnel with an operational background in offshore or aviation communication, able to read and communicate effectively in English; or

  • As determined by the Civil Aviation Authority or other applicable state regulator.
