ICAO 057 — Development Course

Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator

The frontline of aeronautical and maritime emergency response. Built to train mission coordinators in real-world SAR planning and operations, fully aligned with ICAO Annex 12 and Malaysian Civil Aviation Directives.

Duration of Course:
7 Weeks

Course Overview

The ICAO 057 Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator (SMC) Course at Aviation Academy Clearwisdom provides the technical competencies needed to manage full-scale aeronautical search and rescue operations.

Developed in strict compliance with ICAO Annex 12 (Search and Rescue) and the IAMSAR Manual (ICAO Doc 9731), this intensive program transforms experienced aviation and maritime personnel into vital mission leaders capable of executing complex regional emergency responses. Trainees will master the skills required to operate effectively within Rescue Coordination Centres (RCCs) and direct high-stakes on-scene assets.

Mission Critical: “To ensure that air, maritime, and ground assets are synchronized seamlessly under standard international protocols when emergency situations strike.”

Course Curriculum

Our Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator Course is an immersive program that transitions trainees from theoretical grounding to operational command of full-scale SAR missions, combining structured lectures with paper-based SAREX (Search and Rescue Exercise) simulation drills and plotting labs.

The curriculum for the SARMC Course shall ensure that trainees will have demonstrated a level of knowledge in at least the following subjects:

  1. Awareness and notification, including distress alerting systems and COSPAS-SARSAT infrastructure;
  2. Mission planning, including target tracking and wind/water drift estimates;
  3. On-scene command and control procedures;
  4. ATS integration and airspace coordination for rescue operations; and
  5. Special operations and media management.

Rigorous Evaluation Standards

Trainee progress is continuously monitored across all training checkpoints, culminating in comprehensive formal written and practical examinations.

A strict 70% passing benchmark is enforced across all final evaluations to secure official accreditation.
