APPROACH CONTROL SURVEILLANCE COURSE (ICAO 054)
This course aims to provide trainees with knowledge, skills and attitude required as an Approach Surveillance Controller to prepare them for On-The-Job Training leading to a validation at an Approach Control Surveillance Unit.
The acquisition of local procedures at a specific unit must take place at the particular unit during the OJT period, in accordance with the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) of:
- International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
- ICAO Annex 1 Personnel Licensing
- Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).

Note: All participants must achieve a score of 70% or above on all the subject modules.

Course Objective
Upon completion of this course, trainees will be able to:
- demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the topics detailed in ICAO Annex 1 and ICAO Doc 4444, equivalent, to the standard nominated by the trainee’s ATS State Regulatory Authority;
- demonstrate on a Approach Control Surveillance simulator:
- the application of operational planning control techniques and procedures to ensure a safe, orderly and expeditious service to arriving, holding, departing and transiting aircraft;
- the ability to manage the specified workload demand within the specified Approach Surveillance area of responsibility;
Upon satisfactory demonstrated a level of knowledge appropriate to the privileges granted, participants shall be eligible to obtain an Air Traffic Control rating comprised of the Approach Control Surveillance Rating categories.
