Course Overview

Lateral Separation Based on Performance Based Navigation (PBN) and VOR/DME Course is engineered to equip air traffic controllers and airspace planners with the advanced skills required to design, implement, and validate Lateral Separation Points (LSPs).

Participants will master how to leverage both PBN (RNAV/RNP) standards and conventional VOR/DME infrastructure to safely shrink route spacing and maximize sector capacity, featuring hands-on geospatial modeling and definitive SASP safety assessments.

Participants will learn to apply PBN performance metrics to separation safety margins, design compliant Lateral Separation Points using both VOR and GNSS references, and develop the safety assessments needed to support regulatory approval.

Course Curriculum

Our PBN LSP Course is an immersive program engineered to transition trainees from PBN theory to independent, defensible lateral separation design practice.

 

  1. Module 1: Foundations & Charting Principles

    • PBN Navigation Fundamentals
    • PBN Principles and Concepts
    • PBN Operational Aspects
    • Aeronautical Charting (General & RNAV/RNP)

  2. Module 2: Lateral Separation & Safety Engineering

    • Lateral Separation Design Criteria
    • Development of SASP Safety Assessments

  3. Module 3: Geospatial Modeling & Practical Application Labs

    • Practical Lab 1 — Geospatial Familiarization
    • Practical Lab 2 — VOR-Based LSP Design
    • Practical Lab 3 — GNSS Area Portion LSP Design
    • Practical Lab 4 — GNSS Approach Portion LSP Design

Rigorous Evaluation Standards

  • Final Written Exam: A written exam covering ICAO separation criteria, PBN specifications, and SASP safety requirements.
  • Design Mastery Test: An independent practical examination where you must map a compliant LSP using geospatial tools and deliver a baseline safety assessment summary.

Successful graduates receive a formal AvAC Certificate in Lateral Separation Based on Performance Based Navigation (PBN) and VOR/DME Course, validating your ability to spearhead capacity projects at a global standard.

Pre-requisite

  • Completion of the Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Course or equivalent operational airspace design experience, held by an Air Traffic Controller (ATCO), Airspace Designer, Procedure Designer, or Airspace Safety Inspector; or
  • as determined by Civil Aviation Authority or other states Regulator/ Air Navigation Service Provider.
